Tell us about your business or position:
"Hi, my name is Jane Scheurleer and I'm a Motivational Personal and Business Coach and Master NLP Practitioner. Coaching spans right across my career, but I qualified formally 6 years ago when I trained with UK College of Life Coaching and with Motivational Partnerships. In my corporate life I worked for a major international bank for over 15 years and my experience as a senior vice president has enabled me to understand the challenges and pressures faced by business owners and their employees and also what encourages and discourages employees to reach their full potential.
"We are all amazingly unique but we have one thing in common and that's uncertainty. Change arrives at our doorstop whether we’re ready for it or not and were often wrong-footed and unsure of how to move forward or even if we can. I work with individuals and businesses who either want to change or who are having change forced upon them and struggling to figure out how to handle it.
"My focus is on generating the type of mindset that drives individuals to transform their thoughts and actions to achieve success in all areas of their lives. Unlimited self-belief, a clear direction and consistent focus is the cornerstone of that success and my clients both personal and business tell me that working with me has inspired them to transform their lives, and make the changes that have made a real difference to them and their business. "
What achievement in your career/business are you most proud of?
"This is a difficult one, there are so many achievements that I'm proud of (many of which would seem mundane to others). I'm exceptionally proud of forming my own business and taking the step that many of us dream about, but only a few dare to do. I’m equally proud of having reached Senior Vice President with a large international bank, having left school at 16 with no qualifications and with the words of my english teacher still ringing in my ears “you’ll get nowhere without qualifications”. Incorrect Mrs Saxon, you can get anywhere you want to, if you’re focused!"
Three top networking tips:
- "Be interested in what others have to say. Everyone wants to be listened to and you're more likely to be asked about your business if you genuinely engage with others.
- "Have your 60 second elevator pitch ready i.e. you should be able to give a clear introduction about what you do, who you do it with/for, and why they want to work with you. Speed and clarity keeps prospective clients focused on you - drone on and they will quickly run away.
- "Be bold, don't wait for others to make their introductions. Even if there is no-one else on their own, just walk up to a pair or group and when the person talking looks at you, just say 'sorry to stop you when you're in full flow', I'm x from x, please carry on. When they've finished, be ready with your questions and your pitch. "
Three top business/career progression tips:
- "Be clear what your goal is and ensure that if you have several goals, that they're all in alignment. For example, if you'd like to buy and drive a Ferrari but you'd also like to go part-time then you need to review the reality of your situation.
- "Make good quality contacts and nurture them, building a great network around you provides the foundation for both a good career or business.
- "Tell everyone who will listen to you what you want to achieve. There is always someone out there who has done it, knows how to do it or knows someone who can help you do it. Don't be bashful - shout it out. "
Favourite book/film/piece of music
"My favourite book is 59 seconds. It's actually a self-help book by Professor Richard Wiseman which debunks a lot of the self-development myths but pulls in well researched scientific evidence for things such as: why just thinking about going to the gym makes you fitter. Who couldn't love that?"
"My favourite film is Much Ado About Nothing with Kenneth Brannagh and Denzel Washington. It's beautifully filmed in Tuscany, has an amazing cast and can convince anyone that Shakespeare is not only readable but very worthy of the centuries of respect he has had showered on him."
"My favourite piece of music is Gustav Holst, The Planets - Jupiter. Someone I loved very dearly died recently and he had this played as we left the church. It is full of hope and energy and new beginnings. Beautiful."
Which person, living or dead, would you most like to meet and why?
"Oh no, there are so many of them. If pushed I would say Stephen Fry. He's an intellectual with an ability to communicate to anyone at all. Funny, witty, clever, humble and someone that I would love to go to dinner with - I guess he's not a Forward Lady, but you never know. Stephen if you're out there, the meals on me."
What important lesson has life taught you?
"Never, ever give up. We hold so many thoughts in our heads, some of them exceptionally good for us and many of them very destructive towards us. Everytime you think you're beaten, be aware that it's only your mind telling you that and just as you can learn to ride a bike, you can learn to over-ride your mind. Don't give up - Ever!"
Your thoughts on the future of the economy
"We've come through some difficult months and I believe we're not out of the woods yet. However, the economy needs investment, our businesses need investment and we need to carry on investing in others. Anyone over the age of 35 will have seen the ups and downs of our economy in the past few years and will know that when times get tough we have to continue to be optimistic while monitoring and resolving risk. My hope is that banks will begin to loosen their stranglehold on lending and allow the business community to expand and deliver the types of products and services that will deliver a strong economy for our country."
What benefit have you or your business gained by being a Forward Ladies member?
"Quite a lot of benefits actually. First and foremost, someone else finding events for me that I would love to go to. Outsourcing is the answer and Forward Ladies are great at it.
Great contacts, both from a business perspective and also personally. There is something wonderful about meeting so many like minded women and tapping into their expertise and experience.
Advertising, like completing this interview, it's a great opportunity and something that I haven't found anywhere else. "
