Cultural exchange boosts female entrepreneurs
11/06/2009
MEMBERS of Leeds-based networking and business support organisation Forward Ladies, shared news and views with their Indonesian counterparts during a cultural visit.
The delegation of the women's branch of Muslimat Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) - the national Islamic organisation in Indonesia - was led by doctor and group co-ordinator Nedra Binti Ali and included a former Minister for Women's Affairs and heads of education and economics.
Areas discussed included quality control and developing export opportunities from Indonesia.
Margaret Wood, managing director of engineering firm ICW UK, who chaired the meeting, said: "Today's meeting was an important step in building relations with organisations overseas. Despite geographical differences we are bonded by our desire to empower women in business.
"Many of the obstacles they face, such as further education for women in economics, management and business, are areas where Britain has also struggled in the past."
The meeting was organised by the international office of Leeds University and was one of a busy calendar of events that benefit Forward Ladies' members and ambassadors.
Forward Ladies is supported by Yorkshire Forward as part of its commitment to encourage female entrepreneurship in the region.
Launched by Etta Cohen in 2000, it now boasts a 3,500 strong membership across the North.
