Entrepreneurial spirits 'high' in northwest

Entrepreneurial spirits 'high' in northwest

26/02/2010

Figures from Business Link have suggested an upturn in the number of entrepreneurs keen to kick-start their companies in the northwest.

Nearly 2,500 people engaged with the business support agency from April to December last year – up 93 per cent on the same period in 2008.

Peter Watson, managing director of Business Link Northwest, said: "An upturn in the number of people that have engaged with us about starting a business is promising news for Merseyside as it shows that the county’s entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well.

“Year-on-year, the number of enquiries has nearly doubled in the Merseyside area. It’s not just because people are insecure about their job. Starting your own business is becoming more of a popular choice."

He added that he believed people now have more "courage" and "ambition" and that the tough economic climate has "seen that spirit come through more".

Meanwhile, trade minister Lord Davies is urging new business owners not to sell their companies off at an early stage but to build and expand.

Speaking in Cardiff this week he said that "too many British entrepreneurs are selling their businesses".
