Lord Mervyn calls for more women in business

11/12/2009

A government minister has said the UK needs to do more to get women into businesses and encourage female entrepreneurs.

Minister of State for Trade Promotion and Investment Mervyn Davies has suggested that as a country we need to "look at what to do to get women into enterprise".
Speaking to This is London, he said: "If the UK were to have the same percentage of women in business as the US, instead of 4.8 million SMEs we would have 5.6 million."
He added: "We need more women on the boards of major companies - I've got the big headhunters coming in to discuss that."
Lord Davies, a former banker, currently oversees UK Trade and Investment – the country's export support and inward investment agency.
He also has dual accountability to the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
The married father of two was awarded a CBE for his services to the financial sector and the community in Hong Kong in June 2002 and is a JP in Hong Kong.
