Marked rise in female entrepreneurs for 2009

14/01/2010

Barclays has revealed figures showing females are becoming entrepreneurs at a much faster rate than their male counterparts.

New data from the banking group shows that overall, the recession has failed to dampen a rise in self-employment with 460,000 new businesses created in 2009.
The start-up figures show female self-employment increased by 4.9 per cent in the third quarter of 2009 compared with the same period a year earlier. However, male self-employment was up just 1.1 per cent.
Meanwhile, a separate survey suggests many businesses are preparing to head online to reduce costs this year – particularly in terms of marketing.
The Kleinwort Benson UK Entrepreneurs Survey 2009 shows that 76 per cent of 100 business respondents said they plan to increase the use of e-marketing in 2010.
“When making choices to cut costs and determine future strategies, businesses are focusing on online channels,” Joe White, chief operating officer of online service provider Gandi.net told the Financial Times.
“It is cheaper to set up and distribute via the internet, so companies may well choose to close the shop."
